Netherlands-based e-messenger.net, the massively popular web-based IM client, has rebranded as eBuddy and raised an undisclosed sum from a top-tier VC. Originally reviewed on Weblist back in February, e-messenger provides an ajax-powered interface that aggregates MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and AIM. The service launched in 2003.

In the IM aggregator space (multiple messengers on one page), eBuddy competes with Meebo and Mabber. Standalone web-based IMs include ZohoChat and MessengerFX - the latter provides a web interface for MSN Messenger.

The success of these services hinges on the fact that schools and colleges block the use of IM clients. This raises a serious question: once schools get wise to the new breed of web-based messengers, won't they just block those, too? That doesn't bode well for companies like eBuddy that are raising cash on the back of their fleeting popularity.
